Scotland should be a place where all people can satisfy their basic needs and enjoy a good quality of life, so that together we can support positive global change. Adopted in 2015, the Sustainable Development Goals – also known as the SDGs or Global Goals – provide a global framework to achieve change, from eradicating poverty to ensuring a good home for everyone.
In the last decade world events have impacted progress, but they have only highlighted the importance of working towards greater equity for all, to improve wellbeing and reduce our impact on planetary boundaries.
Scotland has always intended to lead the way towards a more equal, more just world. Meeting these goals is a responsibility for us all.
What is Sustainable Development?
Sustainable development is a concept with a long and varied history beyond the SDGs. It bridges multiple disciplines and sectors but is centred around the rights of people and nature.

In Scotland
Many of us know first-hand that poverty, hunger, inequalities and other social injustices have increased across Scotland and how these also impact environmental action.
Understanding and tackling these inter-related issues at home is key to a more positive future.
Globally
The SDGs act as a guideline for action for all countries, with the ultimate aim of saving the planet and ensuring that all people in it live free from poverty and deprivation.
We need to accelerate global cooperation and innovation to build a more equitable, sustainable, and resilient world for all.

“Our vision is for Scotland to be a world leader in sustainable development.
Our mission is to make Scotland a more sustainable nation by facilitating collaborative action towards the SDGs.”
